Signs of dyslexia in adults at workplaces

Although a spurt of recent dyslexia articles and research has led to better understanding and treating dyslexia, many adults of today are still unknowingly silent sufferers of this problem. And nowhere do they suffer as much as at their jobs since they are always working on the edge of the sword, so to say; this is because what they or others may perceive as incompetence or stupidity is actually due to dyslexia which is basically a learning disorder. This may make things difficult at workplaces and when it is their livelihood at question, apprehensions are natural and many adults go through this torment without revealing their problem and suffer being the butt of ridicule from their colleagues/ boss. But, there are certain indicative dyslexic characteristics which they can look out for and then get help.

A few common problems which adult dyslexics encounter at their jobs is making errors while writing checks, missing appointments due to mixing up of time and dates, having problems in following instructions or conveying messages to others and mixing up phone numbers. They have trouble arranging things in sequential order or pronouncing words with the correct sound. If the positive signs outnumber the negatives, then chances of dyslexia are higher. However, this is not a conclusive result of dyslexia in them; these are simply indications and getting professionally evaluated would be the next best step. The important thing to remember is that dyslexia does not mean that dyslexics lack brains but simply that their brains function in a slightly different way.
