Fears adult dyslexics face at workplaces
Dyslexia which is primarily a neurological disorder manifests itself through written and spoken language, more specifically in spelling and reading. Although dyslexia children are being monitored, adults often get the short shift primarily due to their own embarrassment of getting a dyslexia diagnosis. Adults often hide their dyslexia disability for fear of social unacceptability and this may affect the quality of their lives. Their difficulties in reading, writing and handling numbers may lead to work problems as their correspondence may be shoddy or their financial calculations may go haywire.
Since dyslexia also involves poor time management and organizational ability, dyslexic adults at workplaces fear losing their jobs. They might miss out on important meetings or may not be able to keep up with important deadlines or meet the goals of the day simply due to being unable to manage time properly. But, they can overcome this problem by having a planner in which they can organize their daily tasks and by always having a clock on their desks to help them keep track of time. Many adult dyslexics also cannot comprehend instructions and find it difficult to retain what is said to them Always keeping some paper and pen handy to jot down what is being said to them will help them follow the instructions carefully and rightly.
Being dyslexic does not mean that they cannot do their jobs properly; it only means that they need the help of certain techniques to help them get through their workdays.
