Dyslexic children are not stupid!

How many times have we come across children who have difficulties in grasping alphabets, words and numbers and who appear to be making the silliest of mistakes? The simplest of spellings which is easily written by their peers is beyond them. The easiest of mathematical problems leave them confounded and confused and their books may be slashed by red marks all over. In schools, they are scolded by the teachers for being lazy and inattentive and at home they are reprimanded for not working hard enough. They are easy targets for their classmates’ ridicule and the butt of their jokes. Gradually, these children tend to be neglected by overworked teachers who could not be bothered to pay extra attention to any particular child. As a result, they are either overlooked or are constantly scolded for deliberate inattention or tardiness. Their schoolwork too tends to get haphazardly examined as the busy teachers cannot devote time to correcting the same silly mistakes over and over again. Hounded by teachers and parents alike, these children sink into low self-esteem and think of themselves as good for nothing.

But, fortunately, things have changed in recent times thanks to a spate of dyslexia articles and dyslexia books which have shown that this learning disability is due to dyslexia and not due to stupidity. Educators as well as the common people have realized that dyslexics are not intellectually challenged and they only perceive things in a different way and for them to be within the mainstream, all help should be given.
