2. Dyslexia teaching through the multi-sensory approach

Children who have dyslexia cannot cope up with their schoolwork through normal teaching methods because of their learning difficulties and special teaching methods are needed to give lessons. The multi-sensory teaching method is one of the most effective dyslexia teaching methods for them. This method as the term implies means involving the usage of more than one of the senses for effective learning. General teaching is done using either visual or auditory sensations. For the average child it is not difficult to read from books or the board, and look at diagrams or pictures. The hearing sensation is employed to listen to what the teacher is saying. While all this sounds very simple for the average child, a dyslexic child may have problems using either or both of these sensations. Children with dyslexia may have problems with visual tracking or processing. The words may seem fuzzy to them or be jumping around impairing their visual ability. As far as the auditory sensation is concerned, these children may be capable of hearing perfectly what the teacher is saying but their auditory processing or memory may be poor.

Dyslexia tutors would do well to adopt the multi-sensory teaching method which involves three styles of learning styles namely, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Visual is sight, auditory is hearing and kinesthetic is allowing the child to touch and feel objects. Out of these three, the kinesthetic modality is excellent as the child’s brain receives tactile memories to remember as well as visual and hearing memories.
