Dyslexia support from teachers

Dyslexic students experience tangible difficulties although their problems may not be as visual as those of the physically disabled. Teachers can help students out in various ways. Since, students have to do plenty of work-assignments it would help if assignments were given out as printed handouts. This would save dyslexics the embarrassment of figuring out or making errors of copying down assignments from the board. Teachers should also try and assess the work done by dyslexia students mainly based on content and meaning. There may be spelling mistakes galore but that is no indication of poor intelligence but only of poor visual memory. Dyslexic students can be encouraged to show rough drafts of their essays for the teacher’s feedback before handing in the final version.

Keeping dyslexia students informed about the various technological support tools like speech recognition programs, spell checkers, word prediction program etc. will help them tremendously and bolster their self-confidence. Speech recognition programs enable people to dictate their work in the word-processing program; this frees them from the bother of having to concentrate on spellings and can give excellent results. Dyslexic students should be made aware of special support or services which are available in most of the schools and colleges now. They should know that counseling services are available for them if necessary. Extra time for examinations, dyslexia stickers for exams and assignments, permission to record lectures, large print handouts are all dyslexia support tools which help the dyslexic students with their academic progress.
