The importance of a dyslexia society

Dyslexics need ongoing support and help because of their special learning disabilities and to this purpose dyslexia associations can play a major role in bringing these people within the mainstream. The main purpose of a dyslexia society is to create awareness about this problem amongst the general public and especially the educational community. It aims to provide better understanding of this common but misunderstood condition and provide remedial dyslexia strategies so that dyslexics have the help to reach their full potential. It works towards making the general society accept the special needs of these people.

A dyslexia society will usually have a team of special educators, psychologists and other professionals. Services offered will include therapy centers (play therapy, occupational therapy and sensory integration), counseling centers for both dyslexic as well as their families, diagnostic and remedial facilities and support groups. More well-established associations may also have their own research units to develop appropriate teaching and testing materials. Many also regularly conduct workshops in schools and colleges to help educators better understand the special needs of dyslexics. It may also include a training center for conducting workshops and talks with teachers and professionals in various fields. A well-equipped reference library with all the dyslexia resources including journals, books, software is a part of many dyslexia societies. Many societies also include an advocacy cell to negotiate with education authorities on behalf of dyslexic children. A dyslexia association is primarily for developing support for dyslexics to enable them to integrate into society at all levels.
