Dyslexia & Math Difficulties
Dyslexics are often talented when it comes to math. They have three-dimensional visualization skills and this enables them to visualize or see the mathematical concepts much more clearly than others who are non-dyslexic. But the difficulty as regards direction, rote memorization, reading and sequencing can make some of the following math assignments problematic causing their gifted talent to remain undiscovered.
1. Remembering facts about adding and subtracting.
2. Remembering multiplication tables.
3. Remembering the steps to be followed in long division.
4. Reading instructions.
5. Copying one answer from one place to another.
6. They tend to start the math problem from the wrong side.
7. Showing their work becomes difficult as they ‘see’ math in their heads.
8. They cannot quickly proceed with math.
9. In higher level math like algebra, geometry as well as calculus they perform well if they have the proper teacher to guide them through the dyslexic related problems.
