How dyslexia students can more easily navigate the internet

It has been seen that people with dyslexia normally experience some common problems while using the internet. These include poor contrast in backgrounds which may either be too low or too high, small fonts, cluttered page layouts, large blocks of text, blinking or moving text or animated pictures, lots of italics or capitals, automated page or form redirects, too wordy and confusing usage of the English language and justified text which results in uneven spacing between words. Dyslexia students generally have a tough time navigating websites with these designs and they cannot understand the information and are unable to complete tasks like filling online forms. If they can customize the way they use a website, dyslexic persons will find it much easier to navigate the site.

Although certain things will have to remain as they are (for instance, the content), the formatting can be changed to suit individual needs. The font size can be increased or changed ( for example, from Times New Roman to Ariel), the blinking or animated objects can be turned off, all the information required to be printed can be done on so colored paper instead of the usual white paper and the spacing and layout of the page can be changed according to one’s preference. The contrast can be adjusted; dyslexia students often prefer a colored one to a white background.

The internet can become one of the great dyslexia tools as it can cater to specific needs of individuals and its navigation can be customized accordingly.
