Dyslexia and creativity
Dyslexia disability is something in which the individual’s writing, reading, spelling, and mathematical as well as comprehension skills may be hindered. But, what most of us are perhaps not aware of is that dyslexic people can be highly gifted individuals because of this very disorder which makes them subject to ignorant ridicule.
Since being dyslexic means being able to think multi-dimensionally, what is a handicap in reading can turn out to be the source of their creativity. One of dyslexia characteristics is the ability to see things in pictures or to change one’s point of reference which can lead to creative and highly imaginative outputs. The prime example of this is Albert Einstein who claimed that he came up with the theory of relativity because of his imagination in which he saw himself riding on a light wave. Dyslexics see things in a different perspective from others and are also able to process information much more rapidly than non-dyslexic persons, both of which may be responsible for their creative brilliance. Since dyslexics have to manipulate objects in their heads in order to comprehend them, this manipulation lets them draw, design, repair things in innovative ways. For this reason, they often make excellent engineers, plumbers, craftsmen, artists or inventors. Dyslexic individuals can take inspiration from other famous dyslexic personalities including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Leonardo daVinci, Hans Christian Anderson, Woodrow Wilson, Alexander Walt Disney, Winston Churchill and many more and let their creativity speak for itself.
