Child dyslexia : how parents can help
Child dyslexia is a condition that impairs a child’s ability to read, mainly due to problems in processing auditory and visual information. Because of child dyslexia, he may find it confusing to distinguish between letters such as ‘b’ and ‘d’; or he may not be able to understand simple directions.
In addition to new educational tools that can help a dyslexic child to read and write, there are some things that parents of a dyslexic child can do to help him cope with his problems.
# Having a positive influence: Firstly, you have to become very involved with your child by spending quality time with him, playing alphabet games, being in touch with his teachers and taking an interest in his education, and providing ample support and encouragement.
Figure out which are the appropriate learning strategies for your child by assessing his strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to influence your child in a positive way and help him develop self confidence.
# Reading aloud can help in child dyslexia: You will help your child become more proficient at reading if you read aloud to him every day. Choose simple books and point at the words while you read. Encourage the child to point out words he comes across like slogans on T shirts or labels on juice boxes. Provide him with plenty of engaging reading material.
# Talking to your child: Sing nursery rhymes to him to draw his attention to phonetics, to rhyming or similar sounding words, and repeat the words he finds difficult to grasp.
