Cause of Dyslexia

Dyslexia is inherited. The researchers opine that a particular gene on the short arm of chromosome #6 causes dyslexia. It is a dominant gene increasing its probability of being passed down from one generation to another. There is no doubt that it runs through families.

Dyslexia is caused by a neurological or brain difference. The right hemisphere of the brain is larger than normal people in the case of dyslexics. This may account for the fact that the dyslexics are often strong in the fields that are under the control of the brain’s right side. The instances of successful people with dyslexia are artists and athletes. They have other mechanical gifts they are talented with. They have 3-D visual abilities, are musically inclined and have intuitive skills about solving problems.

The architecture of their brain is unique. Apart from this their ‘wiring’ too is out of the ordinary. Neurons of dyslexics are located in unusual niches in the brain and are not as systematically ordered as with those who are non-dyslexic.

f/MRI studies have pointed out that the dyslexics do not make use of the same part of their brains as normal people when they are reading. Those who regularly read repeatedly use the same area of the brain while reading. But the dyslexics do not use that brain area; in fact there is no consistent part of the brain they use while reading.

Hence it is presumed that dyslexics are not making use of the most fertile part of the brain while reading; another area has taken over that operation.
